I stayed by the water until Victor disappeared into the cabin, studying the water and the walking paths around me. The water was still, but likely deep. There was no way we could swim it with no end in sight. The long drive leading to the house was dusty, surrounded by an overgrown field on one side and a thick forest on the other. There were no other houses, no signs of life for miles from where we were. If they wanted to trap us, theyâd done well.
I turned back around as I heard a door slam from somewhere in the distance. Sueâs house. For the first time, I paid extra attention to the small cottage where Sue and Maureen spent most of their time. If there was anyone in the house I believed I could trust, without being persuaded by their devilish good looks, it was Sue, but was my instinct wrong?
I walked across the damp yard, trying to search my brain for what I would say to her. When I hit the pavement in front of her house, I still had no idea.
I knocked on the door and waited, my heart pounding in my chest. I glanced over my shoulder, making sure no one was watching. At least, as far as I knew.
Within a few moments, Sue appeared. I stared at a relaxed version of the chef Iâd never seen, dressed in loose, gray sweatpants and a long-sleeved, purple shirt. When she saw me, her eyes went wide.
âOh, hello, Lark.â Her cheeks pinkened as she wrapped her arms around herself. âIs everything all right?â
âI wondered if I could talk to you about something?â I asked, glancing behind her into the darkness of her house.
âOh, I donât know. They donât like for you to be over here,â she said, looking behind me. Did I see a hint of worry in her eyes? âIs there something wrong? I can come back to the house with you.â
âI think itâd be better if we talked here,â I said. âI donât want to get you into trouble, but itâs importantâ¦â I trailed off, waiting for her to either allow me in or kick me out. In the end, she stepped back, allowing me past her with a sigh.
She shut the door and turned back to face me in the small entryway of the cabin. It was a smaller version of ours, though the finishes werenât as nice. For being the home of a maid and a chef, it was quite messy. I looked away from the pile of papers on a small desk in the living room.
âThank you.â
âWhat is it youâd like to talk to me about?â
âIâm not sure if youâve heard, butâ¦Claireâs gone.â I waited, watching her expression.
Her lips pressed into a thin line, though she couldnât hide the shock in her eyes. âMaureen was called to clean a room early this morning, so I did wonder, but I hadnât heard anything for certain. What happened?â
âElijah said she decided this wasnât a good fit for her.
